9 July 2010  We are off traveling for the next month.  Terry leaves tomorrow to deliver a racing boat (SELMA STAR, Beneteau 36.7 First) from here in Subic Bay to Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia for entry in the Borneo International Yachting Challenge.  SELMA STAR has won this event each of the past three years so the pressure is on.  She's in the background of the masthead on the BIYC website, sail number SVG1367..  The regatta ends in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah the end of July.  Terry will bring the boat back to Subic the first week of August.  Rose left today for a home visit until 9 August.  If you don't get a response to emails during this time you will know why.

7 July 2010  Updated the NAVIGATION page to add CONVERSION of MaxSea ROUTES AND TRACKS TO .gpx FORMAT using the  GPSUtility Program

12 June 2010  Updated the NAVIGATION page to include drivers for the Globalsat USB GPS BU-353

3 June 2010  Terry opted out of Facebook. Getting fake postings from my son and daughter-in-law's Facebook accounts was the final decision maker.  I have avoided joining any of the Facebook 'fun' sites since the privacy of your information on these is nil.  And, philosophically speaking, although these social networking internet groups ... Facebook, Twitter, etc. ... may have some purpose in life for the "Internet Addicts" in this world I'm no longer convinced they are wholesome activities.  The time spent with these might be fun but certainly not as worthwhile as more educational endeavors such as reading a book, researching unknowns (a worthwhile Internet activity), or even 'practicing meditation' (as the Buddhists do).  Am I getting too old?  Perhaps.  But I'm even considering writing some letters, by hand, and mailing them with exotic stamps from the places I visit ... isn't THAT a neat idea?  Problem that I can foresee is that my letters will get thrown out with all of the other junk mail that must be clogging the mailboxes these days ... assuming people still have such an archaic thing as a snail mail box.

21 May 2010  Terry obtained a lifetime visa for the Philippines under the Special Resident Retirement Visa program of the Philippine Retirement Authority.

28 April 2010  The DOWNLOADS page has been revised.  The reason should be obvious to previous visitors to this page.

13 April 2010  Back aboard since 23 March (Terry) and 5 April (Rose).  Holy Week in the Philippines shuts down everything so it was a relief to have it over.  Terry participated in the Commodore's Cup Regatta (6-10 April) as navigator/trimmer on SELMA STAR. Good fun!  Now doing SLOJ in preparation for some local cruising.

16 March 2010  Arrived safely at Sutera Harbour on 13 March.  Did the passage of 610NM in just under five days.  Had light following winds and seas for first two days then moderate beam winds (25-30 kts) for the remainder.  One of the best sails we've had in years.  The Lord Nelson 41 is seakindly and comfortable.  Thanks to Pauline Wilkinson for the experience.  We are catching up with friends and eating our way through favorite restaurants here in KK.  We will return to the Philippines on 22 March ... Rose will go on to Bohol and Terry will go back to VALHALLA.

8 March 2010 Departing today on SHADOW OF LORELEI bound for Sutera Harbour, Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, Malaysia.  Will be offline from the Internet for the next week.

4 March 2010  Revised the NAVIGATION' page to include previous postings concerning navigation.  Added an update to the YotEeePC page.

Our next adventure is to assist a friend in her delivery of SHADOW OF LORELEI (Lord Nelson 41) from Subic Bay to Sutera Harbour, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.  Planned departure is O/A 8 March.

27 February 2010  Added the page 'NAVIGATION' as a work in progress.

26 February 2010  We moved back aboard today!  Still have some final varnishing to do but decided to quit being CLODs (Cruisers Living On Dirt).

14 February 2010  The varnishing has progressed to where the boat can be put 'back together' this weekend and we can move back aboard next week.  Terry is scheduled to race on 20 February as navigator on SELMA STAR (36.7 Beneteau First) in an overnight passage race from Subic to Cabra Island and return ... about 120 NM.

HAPPY VALENTIN'ES DAY!

17 January 2010  Work on VALHALLA resumed on 4 January.  The machine shop work wasn't correct and had to be redone which took a few days.  But the aquadrive unit and associated parts went together on 6 January.  Bottom work of barrier, intermediate and antifouling was next done and we launched on 13 January for a 10 minute passage to our old berth at the Subic Bay Yacht Club.  Terry declared 16 and 17 January as holidays in advance of interior varnishing which will be done next.  We continue to live in our 'apartelle' until that is completed.

Updated the PROJECTS page to include the aquadrive™ Installation.

14 December 2009  The haulout work has progressed slowly (of course) but is now at a good stopping point.  The bottom is prepared for application of barrier coating and antifouling.  A thrust bearing bulkhead has been fabricated and installed for the installation of the new aquadrive unit.  The propeller shaft is at the machine shop for modification.  Interior wood surfaces have been prepared for varnishing.  We leave today for our Holiday Travel.  Rose goes home to Bohol and Terry goes 'walkabout' to Singapore, Mayalsia and Thailand.  We rendezvous at Clark (Angeles City) on 30 December.  Happy holidays to one and all.

28 November 2009  Revised the DOWNLOADS page to correct broken links for some downloads.  All links shown in purple are located on a site with a 100 GB per month download limit.  If unable to download please wait until a new month; rollover is around the 20th of each month

7 November 2009  Hauling out the boat today for perhaps 2 months.  We've moved into a room with kitchen at the Hilltop, in the Kalayaan housing area of Subic Bay Freeport Zone, ten minutes away from the boat.  In addition to antifouling the bottom, an 'Aquadrive' unit will be installed in the drive train between the engine transmission and prop shaft.  We've hired a 'boat boy' to help with the work.

5 July 2009  Latest plan is to depart on 7 July for a 'Trekker' trip (in our Ford Ranger Trekker) around North Luzon. This is the trip we aborted in May due to weather (Typhoon Chan-hom).  VALHALLA will remain berthed at the Subic Bay Yacht Club.

25 Jun 2009  Rocking and rolling on a mooring at N. Pandan Island, Mindoro.  Picked up the mooring two days ago when an approaching Tropical Depression was headed our way.  It intensified to Tropical Storm Feria (Nangka in the Philippines) and passed 30NM to the north of our location.

NavMonPC CONFIGURATION  (7 Jun 2009)

18 May 2009  After three days of cleaning the birdshit from the boat Terry decided to try something from the farmer's box of tricks.  His scarecrow seems to work ... only one drop in four days!

13 May 2009   Added an update to the DOWNLOADS page under MAXSEA GUIDES. It covers GPS offsets to correct positions displayed on the cm93 charts.

11 May 2009 Returned to the boat on 10 May.  Delayed flight on 'Cebu Pathetic ... err Pacific' Manila to Dumaguete put us on board in the dark.  While we were gone the blackbirds built three nests in the canvas and left a horrible mess on everything!

7 May 2009  Typhoon Chan-hom has put a damper on our plans to do a tour around North Luzon.  May head back to the boat soon??  Revised the Links page to reflect the new URL for the Joint Typhoon Warning Center at the public accessible Navy Oceanography Portal.

26 April 2009 Arrived at Donsul, Luzon, Philippines last evening and spent the night at a 'homestay' complete with cackling and crowing chickens through most of the night!.  Will move to a resort today for the next three nights.  Plan is to swim with whale sharks tomorrow as Terry's 73rd birthday adventure.  More on this trip later.

22 March 2009 We've found a lazy way to catch fish ... let them jump into the dinghy at night!  Here's a hairtail that greeted us this morning in the dinghy.  Those nasty looking fangs have barbs on them to keep their prey from getting away.

17 March 2009  HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY  Last week we contributed to the economic recovery of the Ford Motor Company by purchasing a 2009 Ford Ranger Trekker.  This figures into our plans that are being developed to tour South Luzon during the April/May time frame.  More to come about this adventure.

8 January 2009  Results of testing the MaxSea navigation program with the Vista operating system are shown in the update at the bottom of the DOWNLOADS page.

5 January 2009  Each year I realize why Australians call this the 'silly season'.  After the Christmas holiday Terry and Rose met in Cebu and assembled a continent of her daughters and nieces (seven of them) for an excursion to Port Bonbonon, arriving on 29 December.  The ladies, ranging in age from 7-16, filled the guest house of our friend Bruce Greschke.  His guest house is named 'Turkey Flats' (another story) but for this occasion it got renamed as shown here.  Rose's birthday is today ... which is the day the girls had to be back in school ... so she's home once again until tomorrow.  We celebrated her birthday on 2 January with a pig roast dinner for over 100 friends from the yachts and the community.  See the page 'ROSE'S BIRTHDAY PARTY 2009' under Valhalla's Adventures.

24 December 2008  NEWS FLASH FOR MAXSEA NAVIGATION PROGRAM USERS!  Have you tried to run the MaxSea navigation program under the Microsoft Vista operating system and could not get the boat position displayed on the chart?  Here's some hope for a solution ... go to the bottom of the DOWNLOADS page for the latest information.  Merry Christmas.

14 December 2008  A change of plans!  Rose's 10 yr old daughter, Dana, got sick just before our scheduled departure and is still in a hospital in Cebu as they try to find a solution to fever and coughing.  Hopefully she will be discharged soon.  Terry is now at Subic Bay visiting with John Campbell and Glenda, his partner.

7 December 2008  Today and tomorrow the Mandawa Fiesta is in full swing.  This is Rose's home on Bohol and she is there working away as the family serves food and drink to all of the visitors.  We meet in Cebu on 11 Dec, fly to Clark (near Manila) on 12 Dec, travel to Subic Bay on 13 Dec and visit with our dear friend John Campbell.  Rose will return to Mandawa on 19 Dec for the Christmas holiday.  We again meet in Cebu on 26 Dec and decide how to spend the rest of the year.

23 September 2008  Departed Sutera Harbour Marina, Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, Malaysia for a passage to Port Bonbonon, Negros, Philippines.  This passage will be a leisurely one ... with stops along the way as we traverse the North Borneo coast.  Not sure when or if we will have internet access until after arrival in the Philippines.  You can always catch up with us via our Radio Email address shown here.

17 September 2008  Updated the VALHALLA'S FEATURES page.

27 August 2008  Back at Sutera Harbour yesterday.  The organization and participants at the Borneo International Yachting Challenge 2008 were underwhelming.  The two night's free stay at the Grand Dorsett hotel was the highlight of the regatta for us.  Had a photo of the boat underway taken on our passage to Labuan and it's here.  Will make some plans for our next adventure ... whatever that may be.

19 August 2008  We've been taking it easy, Terry has recovered from the flu, and we are still on track to depart 21 August for the Borneo International Yachting Challenge 2008.  The plan is to return to Sutera Harbour the first week of September.

6 August 2008  After 25 years since sailing VALHALLA in a race, we've entered the Borneo International Yachting Challenge 2008, to be held 23-28 August.  Was it the $400 to be given to each entering yacht that was the deciding factor?  Or topping off the booze locker in Labuan?  Or both?  Stay tuned!

3 August 2008  Completed the page Hawaii (8 July-1 August 2008) under Valhalla's Adventures.   IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME !!

15 July 2008  We're going 'like a lizard licking', as the Aussies would say.  Terry's medical checks are underway and looking OK so far.  We're doing as much sight-seeing as time allows.  Have begun a page for this trip Hawaii (8 July-1 August 2008) under Valhalla's Adventures.  It's very much 'under construction' so check back for updates.

14 June 2008  Updated the Yachts for Sale page to add 45' Jeanneau SY FORTUNE CARREE.

13 June 2008  It's FRIDAY THE 13TH!!!  But not being superstitious Terry considers it just another day.  Rose is in the Philippines on a home visit while Terry does some boat projects ... fabricating a new forward hatch wind scoop (see the previous one made in 1999 here), maintenance on the dinghy, and some SLOJs (shitty little odd jobs).  We meet at Clark Air Base on 7 July and depart Manila on 8 July for a three week trip to Hawaii.  Two weeks planned on Oahu where Terry will host a party to celebrate his 20th anniversary of leaving Honolulu on 18 July, visit family and friends, medical checks, and touring then on to the Big Island for one week.  We will stay at the Kilauea Military Camp and see the latest eruption of Mount Kilauea then visit with some of Terry's former cruising friends now living in Kona.  On our return we will overnight in Guam and visit friends there before flying back to Manila on 31 July.  Our planned return to VALHALLA is on 1 August.

14 May 2008 Added Passage from Sebana Cove to Kota Kinabalu (6-  May 2008) under Valhalla's Adventures.

12 May 2008  We encountered some unexpected bad weather and changed our destination to Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia.  Arrived SAFELY (but a bit tired) yesterday, 11 May, after five days and four hours.  We had four severe thunderstorms with winds in excess of 40 knots and during the last storm ran over a log longer than the boat, hitting it square in the middle but with no apparent damage (will dive tomorrow to confirm).  Typhoons in the north China Sea are bringing this spate of weather so we will watch it closely before proceeding north.  The Miri marina is operational now, unlike our stop here in 2005. It lacks toilets, showers, and fuel pier and has had a significant increase in rates.  As of 1 April 08 the rate is RM1 per foot per day plus RM2 per day for water and electricity.

6 May 2008  Departing at noon today for passage to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo.  Plan is to go directly, 780 NM.

12 April 2008  Updated the DOWNLOADS page.  Revised the MaxSea Routes and added Using AIS with MaxSea under  MAXSEA GUIDES.

8 April 2008   Removed the link to Franson GPS Gate from the Links page.  Encountered the runaround in attempting to pay through ShareIt and cannot, in good conscience,  recommend something that is so inconvenient to purchase.

2 April 2008.  Added a link to Franson GPS Gate to the Links page.  This nifty piece of software solves some integration problems using the GPS with several application programs.

27 March 2008  Completed an Alternator Controller project and posted it to  the Projects page.

18 March 2008  Added the page Kuala Lumpur and Cameron Highlands (2-8 March 2008) under Valhalla's Adventures.

12 March 2008  Back onboard after a week long trip to Kuala Lumpur and the Cameron Highlands.  Four days on buses .. but they were very comfortable rides of up to 6 hours.  Constant rain since our return.

24 February 2008  Added a page "Look what the dummy did!" under Valhalla's Adventures.

19 February 2008  Updated the Yachts for Sale page to show that Kanji's Fuji 32 Cutter has been sold.  Congratulations to both the old and the new owners!

17 January 2008  We returned this afternoon from a one-week trip (via big bird) to Langkawi.  Everything found OK on board.  The purpose of the trip was to renew Rose's Malaysian visa, one year, and to visit friends.  We were pleased to attend the 50th birthday party of a dear friend, Dr Peter Wurm, at The Andaman resort on Datai Bay.  Now we can devote some time to deciding what to do next!
