MAXSEA GUIDES

VALHALLA's guides to the MaxSea navigation program have been written as an alternative to the cumbersome Help files in that program.

Guides for two versions are available.

MaxSea 10.1.3.2 ... go here.

MaxSea 10.3.2.1  Three guides are available:  MaxSea 10.3.2.1 Installation Guide, MaxSea 10.3.2.1 Tutorial, and Using AIS with MaxSea.

The guides are in .zip format and require a suitable extraction program, such as WinZip available from  http://www.winzip.com.

After downloading, unzip the file (using WinZip or any other suitable program) into a folder for use by the MaxSea program version you have. (Normally in the 'My Documents' folder)

If you find any changes to suggest or if you have trouble downloading these guides, please contact me at the 'land based email' address shown here.

MAXSEA ROUTES

A collection of routes for use with the MaxSea electronic charting program (Ver 10.1.3.2 and later))

The routes are in a .zip format and require a suitable extraction program (such as WinZip available from  http://www.winzip.com ).

Check out the collection by clicking 'routedescriptions.txt'  which lists the routes, a description, the beginning and ending waypoints, and the route distance.  This description file is also included in the collection.

Download the collection of routes here.

After downloading, unzip the file (using WinZip or any other suitable program) into a folder for use by the MaxSea program.  (Normally in the 'My Documents' folder)

I WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGE WHATSOEVER THAT MAY BE CAUSED BY USING THESE ROUTES.

If you find any changes to suggest to any route, please let me know.  If you have any routes to contribute to the collection please send them to me at our 'land based email' address shown here.

SOUTHEAST ASIA WEATHER FILES

The Meteorological Service Division, National Environment Agency, Singapore has a Shipping Home Page with a wealth of weather information.  The Regional Weather Charts give a daily synopsis of the weather, in chart form, for southeast Asia.  Over the past several years Terry has saved these images (missing some days, of course) and they are compiled below in .zip format for the months shown.  The files range in size from 3 to 4 MB.  You may find these useful for planning passages in Southeast Asia.

AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM (AIS) PRESENTATION

Terry gave a presentation on this subject at the Sebana Cove Marina on 25 November 07.  The talk is in PowerPoint format and a zipped file can be downloaded here.  Beware ... it's a rather large file, about 7.7MB.  You will need to have Microsoft Power Point (part of the Microsoft Office suite) installed to view this presentation.   Unzip all of the files into one folder then start the presentation by double-clicking on the file 'Automatic Identification System.pps'.

MaxSea and Vista

Until now I have been at a loss to find a way for the MaxSea navigation program to work properly with the Microsoft Vista operating system.  The MaxSea program would run nicely displaying the nautical charts and the program would show that GPS data was being received by the program BUT the boat position either was not displayed or was displayed  only at the starting position of 0 degrees latitude and 0 degrees longitude.  I, and others, assumed the problem was the need for a Vista patch to the MaxSea program.  WRONG!

Now, thanks to Jim Buchanan, an Australian sailing-computer guru, the problem has been found to be the need for a Vista upgrade to the drivers for the GPS link into the computer.  Jim has been Santa Claus this year!

So far, we have found Vista drivers for the following:

Hollux GR-213 USB GPS.  Download the driver from here.  Or from the Hollux website.

Globalsat BU-303 and BU-353 USB GPS:  Download the driver from here.  Or from the Globalsat website.

Prolific USB to Serial (RS-232) Adapter:  Download the driver from here.  Or from the Cooldrives.com website.

Testing of all of these drivers is ongoing. The Hollux GPS works fine on a Sony Vaio machine. More results should be available here the first week of January 2009.

(UPDATE 8 JAN 2009)

Installation on two machines has now been successfully done.

1.  A Dell Inspiron 1720 running Vista Home Premium edition.  The Hollux GR-213 driver was installed and the position shown on the charts correctly.

2.  A Sony Vaio running Vista Business edition.

    a.  Globalsat BU-353 USB GPS.  The Globalsat driver mentioned above was installed but failed to show the position (i.e., not data was seen entering the program).  Since this unit uses a Prolific adapter chip the Prolific adapter mentioned above was installed.  VOILA! Position data was received and the vessel position was shown correctly on the chart.

    b.  Furuno GP-32 GPS with Prolific USB-RS232 adapter.  Loaded immediately and showed position data being received and vessel position shown correctly on the chart.

IF ANYONE HAS SUCCESS OR FAILURE RUNNING THIS CONFIGURATION, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.  Contact information

LAPTOP BATTERY INFORMATION PROGRAM

An excellent program for showing the battery information on a laptop can be downloaded here or from the website.

I made settings in the program to display 1) Capacity in percent, 2) Remaining time and 3) Current power consumption.
